A powerful evening of pride, recognition, and community spirit unfolded at the Rose Green Centre in Bristol, as the Football Black List honoured outstanding local figures driving change both on and off the pitch.
Held on Friday 10 October in partnership with The FA, the night brought together current and former players, grassroots pioneers, and passionate supporters to spotlight Black excellence in football across Bristol.
Among those honoured was Layah Douglas, a key player for Bristol Rovers Women and the founder of Layah’s League, a youth coaching initiative built on values of inclusion and representation. Her dual impact as both a player and a community advocate has inspired many across the city.
Also recognised was the Tyrone Mings Academy, an initiative that pairs elite football training with mentorship and personal development. Reflecting on the award, England international Tyrone Mings said:
“The award is an extremely proud moment for the academy. I’m super proud of what the academy has turned into and what it continues to deliver.”
Abdirizak Hussein, Director and Coach at Phoenix Next Gen FC, was celebrated for his visionary leadership. Hussein has built a football club that does far more than develop talent — it creates pathways for newly settled families, supports young people into employment, and ensures that financial barriers never stand in the way of participation.
Naomi Reid, Coaching Lead at Bristol Central, was recognised for her leadership and impact on teenage footballers in the area. A passionate advocate for representation in sport, Naomi has helped create inclusive environments where players can thrive.
The power of youth leadership was embodied in Nyah Kiwanuka, whose determination sparked the growth of a thriving girls’ football programme at Bristol Central.
Rounding out the awardees was Benjamin McLeod, founder of 4Four The Future, a transformative football academy that mentors young men across Bristol to grow in confidence, character, and ambition.
The evening also included inspiring reflections from representatives of the FA and community figures on the importance of visibility, opportunity, and representation in football.
Football Black List co-founder Leon Mann shared:
“This was the first time we took the Football Black List into the heart of a community and it was a resounding success.
Thanks to the people of Bristol for coming out and showing the event a lot of love and support.
Congratulations to all the awardees, they’re all super inspiring, and for the Football Black List to amplify their talent is a privilege.
We can’t wait to continue to further the impact of the Football Black List together with communities, the football industry and all supporters of our movement.”
The Football Black List thanks all who attended for an unforgettable evening of celebration, connection, and community pride.
